Chosun Daily Reduces Ink Costs by 13% with Kodak Thermal Plates

Like a lot of newspaper publishers Chosun Daily, Korea’s largest and most respected daily broadsheet faces numerous challenges to its print product.  As consumers continue to migrate to digital news formats, maintaining a profitable and dynamic print edition is not an easy job.

While the company is making smart investments to build out its digital platform, Chosun also focuses on ensuring its daily printed newspaper is attractive to those who still like reading print. And maybe, more importantly, it’s investing in printing technology that is helping the company maintain a profitable print operation.

With a circulation of nearly 1.4 Million daily copies, Chosun prints 8.4 Million pages a day. And in a typical edition, which is about 60 pages, 36 pages are printed in color, an important feature that keeps both readers and its advertisers engaged with its print product. When Chosun looked to invest in new print technology they targeted improvements to their pre-press operation, which at the time was powered by a conventional film system.

Chosun Daily chose to modernize their plate making process by investing in thermal CTP technology and KODAK THERMAL NEWS GOLD Plates. Thanks to converting CTP solution, they shaved off 15minutes from their print production process.

With the integration of KODAK THERMAL News Plates, Chosun has realized a 13% reduction in ink amount. It’s cost is annually 1million USD.  And with features like Kodak Staccato Screening Technology, which produces high fidelity, continuous tone images with excellent detail and an extended color gamut, Chosun Daily has also reduced smearing, staining, and set-offs.

The changes to the company’s pre-press, with Kodak technology playing an important role, ensure that Chosun Daily can deliver a great printed news product profitably, today, and into the future.
