2016 Kodak SONORA Green Leaf Award: Kunshan KAVA Printing Co., Ltd.

KAVA: Leading China’s Printing Industry Into An Eco-friendly Era

KAVA Printing is a pioneer in eco-friendly printing in China and has set the pace for how the industry approaches sustainable print. An early adopter of digital printing, KAVA understands that printing technology has the potential to deliver productivity increases, while also yielding gains in their objective to become a more sustainable business. In 2015 KAVA took a big step forward down this path, becoming the first printer in China to select Kodak’s SONORA UV Process Free Plates. The switch to process free plate making means Kava no longer has to spend the time and money treating the nearly two tons of chemical waste the operation was generating annually. It has also increased the speed at which they operate, with plates getting to press quicker. In addition to using Kodak SONORA UV Process Free Plates, KAVA is IPA-free. They now print with UV ink– which contains no solvents compared to traditional ink, adding to the company’s efforts to eliminate chemical waste during the printing process.

KAVA’s sustainable print model has also elevated the company’s reputation among one its most important customer groups, consumer packaged good companies. For these brands, the environmental credentials of their print suppliers can mean the difference between winning and losing the contract. Investment in technology like SONORA is a big reason that brands from the cosmetics, infant formula, and consumer goods sector continue to place their trust and print jobs with KAVA.

KAVA’s approach to managing its impact on the environment is also earning applause from China’s regulators –who have made it a priority for industry’s like printing to reduce their environmental impact. It received the “Energy-efficient Star Award” in 2012 and the “Clean Production Enterprise Certificate” in 2014 from the government. In 2016, KAVA reinforced its commitment to the environment and social responsibility by establishing the Suzhou City Green Printing Engineering and Technology Research Center. In the same year, the company showcased its green printing practices at the prestigious Suzhou Technology Fair. The company also holds the vice chairmanship of the Kunshan Packaging Industry Association.

“KAVA has been committed to printing responsibly since we first set-up our operation. We’re proud to take a leadership role in this very important area for the print industry in China. Our sustainable printing practices are an important part of running a healthy and profitable business,” commented Mr. Wang Jian Hua, general manager of KAVA Printing.

Kodak was proud to honor KAVA with the 2016 Kodak SONORA Green Leaf Award. The recognition shines a spotlight on KAVA’s leadership and influential voice as an eco-friendly printing enterprise in one of the world’s largest print markets.

Kodak's Doug Edwards and Bing Wang address delegates at the Flexo Association of China's Annual conference

Kodak’s Doug Edwards and Bing Wang address delegates at the Flexo Association of China’s Annual conference

Kodak’s Doug Edwards was recently in China for the Flexo Association’s Annual Meeting to talk about the future of flexography in package printing.  He noted that over the past five years, the packaging market has grown from $237B to $307B with emerging markets like China powering this expansion. Today, Flexo printing comprises 39% of the packaging printing market and is growing at a rate of 2-4% per year. Doug attributes Flexo’s increasing share of the market to some of the big improvements in technology, including Kodak’s Squarespot technology, which delivers improved tonal reproduction and excellent print stability across a range of packaging substrates.  Looking into the future of packaging, Doug discussed the opportunity to create a range of innovative new packaging applications, including, smart packaging embedded with sensors and printing solutions that are enabling greater brand protection.  Imagine food packaging that could tell consumers if a bag of food had been out of the refrigerator too long.   To learn more about Kodak’s solutions for smart packaging and brand protection, visit www.kodak.com/go/brandprotection

India’s Rachna opens up new growth opportunities

Rachna Prints, a Bhivandi-based start-up focused on pre-press, recognised an opportunity to help its customers in the very large format print market improve their productivity, while producing higher quality printing for their clients.  The company has chosen to migrate away from its conventional plate exposing process and has invested in a Kodak Trendsetter 1600, a very large format (VLF) CTP platesetter.

In an interview with PrintWeek India, Ashish Vazirani, managing director at Rachna Prints, explained why they decided to make the switchPrintWeek India Logo “We were using the conventional plate exposing technology for which film is required. Procuring a film positive of 40x56inch is expensive and a difficult task for our customer and us. Moreover, the quality achieved by using the conventional method is not very high. The important factor is time. The Kodak VLF platesetter will help in reducing the time and saving money. It will provide higher quality printing with faster turnaround and more control on the press.”

Print Newspaper industry adopts to challenges by innovating with hybrid printing applicatons

As circulation and print advertising revenues continue to decline, the question from printers today is how to create a newspaper model that is attractive to both readers and advertisers, whilst providing a healthy margin for publishers. To address this challenge, Kodak hosted 140 professionals from the Newspaper, Advertising, Distribution, and Printing industry from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, and South Korea at a 3 day seminar.

Axel Springer integrates Kodak Prosper across all its German printing sites

Axel Springer integrates Kodak Prosper across all its German printing sites

A major focus of the seminar dived into how some of the world’s leading publishers are giving their web presses a new lease on life by integrating hybrid inkjet systems, like Kodak’s PROSPER S SERIES high-speed digital inkjet heads.

These hybrid systems are helping publishers offer their advertisers dynamic new ways to target their customers with variable data and targeted marketing campaigns that deliver a higher ROMI.

See how some of our customers, including Germany’s Axel Springer and China’s Shenzhen Press Group are  transforming their businesses with hybrid inkjet in these great case studies.

Kodak customers rack up 23 Awards at FTA Flexography Awards.

A big congratulations to all of our customers from from North America, Europe, Japan and Australia who took home a  total of 23 awards in six categories for  eye-catching jobs produced with KODAK FLEXCEL NX Plates at 2013 Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) Excellence in Flexography Awards.    Kodak customers also claimed three of the seven coveted overall “Best of Show” honors for their outstanding projects. Flexel

One of the trends noted by judges is that today’s technology is helping flexographic printing achieve photorealistic quality. Many of them indicated that flexography is continuing to rival and even surpass offset, gravure, and digital print processes.  Photos and information about all the winners can be found in the May issue of FLEXO magazine at www.flexography.org

Sydney’s Cojo ramps up its digital business

It’s great to see that our customers are getting  a little media spotlight for the great work they do on behalf of their clients.  Cojo, which is one of Australia’s top mailing and fulfillment service houses is currently operating two KODAK NEXPRESS machines. They were recently profiled in ProPrint magazine, where they talked about some of the major new jobs they’ve handled over the past few months. The full article is online hereProPrint_Australia

The quote below from Cojo’s Rod Jone’s is really what it’s all about:

The first one won us business. The second one has enabled us to continue adding clients to that digital offering. In order to keep up with demand, we needed a second engine, he said. There’s a general increase in demand for digital print. Because we’re a mailhouse and it’s all variable stuff, there’s increasing sophistication in the DM stuff that goes out, and that can’t be achieved with the offset-and-laser-overprint combination.
